Florida's stance on immigration enforcement came into the spotlight again, with Governor Ron DeSantis alongside state and federal law enforcement officials, emphasizing the coordinated effort to tackle illegal immigration. In a recent press conference, as posted on social media by Sheriff Rob Hardwick, authorities celebrated the injection of new federal funding earmarked for sheriff's offices across the state, supporting their work under the 287(g) program.
This program fosters collaboration between local law enforcement and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), as noted during the event by figures such as Attorney General James Uthmeier and ICE Deputy Director Madison D. Sheahan, initiatives that intertwine with new state laws and a stream of fresh funding have been prioritized by the Legislature which their merits were extolled, without a pause, touting the importance of investing in what they perceive as a primary community concern—the unwavering safety of residents day in, day out.
"This funding isn’t just lip service, it’s doubling down on the commitment to invest in what law enforcement believes is the top concern of every community—keeping our citizens safe each day and every night," Sheriff Rob Hardwick highlighted. Further elaborating, he expressed gratitude towards the President and Governor DeSantis for spearheading these efforts.
