Florida Panthers captain Aleksander "Sasha" Barkov was forced to exit this morning's practice with a concerning situation unfolding, an apparent lower-body injury. The disruption came during a drill in the offensive zone at the Baptist Health IcePlex, throwing a sizable wrench into the works for what was supposed to be the first full practice session with the heavy-hitters on ice, including Barkov, per Local 10.
After what looked to be a right leg issue, Barkov wasn't able to skate off by himself and needed the help of two trainers to leave the scene. According to a report from Local 10, the man wasn't seen again on the rink for the duration of the day's practice. Coach Paul Maurice, maintaining a calm demeanor in the face of adversity, promised more info to come. "He’ll get looked at today,” Maurice stated to the press, and "I’ll have a better answer for you tomorrow,” capturing the cautious optimism everyone's attempting to hold onto.
The Panthers, coming off back-to-back Stanley Cup championships, now face the possibility of starting the season without a cornerstone of their roster. Aleksander Barkov, the franchise leader in nearly every major category—including games played and goals—has an uncertain status, according to WSVN. Head coach Paul Maurice addressed the situation, saying, "Beyond our control, so there’s no concern."
The Panthers are set to face the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday night, but the uncertainty lies in whether Aleksander Barkov will be in the lineup or sidelined for an indefinite recovery period. Jesper Boqvist told WSVN, “Not a guy you want to see go down, for sure.”
