The case against the former Osceola County Sheriff Marcos Lopez, who faces racketeering and conspiracy charges, seems to deepen as recently released affidavits shed light on his alleged involvement in an illegal gambling ring. According to documents detailed by ClickOrlando, Lopez is accused of accepting multiple hundreds of thousands of dollars in illegal payments. Moreover, the allegations point to a broader criminal enterprise operating from August 2019 to August 2024.
The former sheriff wasn't the only one arrested: Ying “Kate” Zhang, Sharon Fedrick, Sheldon Wetherholt, Carol Cote, and Lopez’s wife, Robin Lynn Severance Lopez, were also charged, as per details from the 255-page affidavit. In a statement obtained by ClickOrlando, the affidavit highlighted that "Marcos Lopez played a multifaceted role in the expansion and protection of this enterprise." Investigators charged that in his capacity as an elected official, Lopez deliberately shielded the operation from legal scrutiny.
Further evidence of Lopez's involvement was extracted from text messages between him and the co-conspirators, one of which stated, "no matter what the outcome is when I win we start the first internet amusement cafe in Osceola County. You will be safe and not have to worry about anything because I will be your sheriff." This exchange, among others, was revealed through an affidavit reported by WFTV. Lopez has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
