Tragedy struck the streets of Fruitland Park in July, where a couple was recently arrested in connection with a deadly DUI crash that claimed the life of a local artist. According to WFTV, Tyrell Colbert, 33, and his wife, Stephanie Colbert, 32, were taken into custody yesterday following the July 12 incident involving a black Toyota Tacoma and a 2018 Toyota Camry. The collision, occurring around 6:30 p.m. on U.S. Hwy 27/441 and Seagle Street, resulted in the death of Robert Longenecker, 32, at the scene.
Chief Henry Rains of the Fruitland Park Police Department shared his condolences, "Our thoughts and prayers remain with the Longenecker family as they continue to grieve this heartbreaking loss," he expressed, emphasizing the irreversible impact of impaired driving. Police revealed that Tyrell Colbert, behind the wheel of his Tacoma, was not only under the influence of alcohol but also speeding well over the limit, driving at 80 mph in a zone designated for 45 mph, as WFTV reported.
In the aftermath of the crash, investigations uncovered attempts by both Tyrell and Stephanie Colbert to destroy evidence related to the incident. This development adds a layer of complexity to a case already weighed down by sorrow and loss. Details provided by WESH further elucidate that Stephanie Colbert was arrested for tampering with evidence, and her husband faces charges of DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide.
