A significant hazmat situation prompted the closure of the southbound lanes of I-215 at California Avenue this past Saturday in Salt Lake City. This disruption in the city’s circulatory system came as a result of a fuel spill, and as KUTV reports, the incident occurred around 10:15 a.m. near 2100 South, causing considerable traffic delays and back-ups. KUTV stated HAZMAT crews were immediately dispatched to manage the situation, though specific details about the spill's nature were not forthcoming.
In response to the incident, officials with the Utah Department of Transportation advised motorists to seek alternative routes. Confirmed by Sgt. Mike Alexander with the Utah Highway Patrol reported that approximately 25 gallons of fuel were spilled onto the highway, impacting the flow of traffic, with diversions set up at California Avenue. Motorists were having to deal with the fallout, and were recommended to use Interstate 15 instead, as noted by KSLTV.
Communication about the spill and its implications for travel was amplified through social media platforms, with the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) issuing a warning for delays via X, which has replaced Twitter. They replied around 11:30 a.m. to a continuous thread of updates about the incident and advised drivers on detours and potential delays. FOX13 relayed this information to the public following UDOT's update on the road conditions.
