Residents of the Garden District are gearing up for the debut of a new mural at the corner of 13th and Howard this Thursday. According to a release from the City of Milwaukee, the event kicking off at 4 p.m. at 3900 S. 13th St. will gather community members, Alderman Spiker, Mayor Cavalier Johnson, Executive Director of The Gateway to Milwaukee Leif Otteson, and muralist Cory Nikolaus for the celebration.
The artwork was created by Nikolaus, whose 16 years of experience as a funeral director and cemetery manager inform the mural’s focus on themes of life, death, and remembrance. The piece is structured around concepts of impermanence and legacy, reflecting subject matter consistent with her professional background, according to information shared by the City of Milwaukee.
This collaboration extends beyond the artwork itself, with the project receiving support through The Gateway to Milwaukee’s Property Beautification Grant Reimbursement Program and local business Brown Wilbert Vault Co.
