The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has stepped in to assess an officer-involved shooting incident in Coffee County. The request for the investigation came directly from the local Sheriff's office, following an encounter that resulted in Tommy Randy Musgrove II, a 44-year-old resident of Douglas, GA, being shot by law enforcement officials. The incident, which fortunately did not result in any officer injuries, unfolded in the early hours of a seemingly tranquil Sunday morning.
According to information gleaned from a GBI press release, the Douglas Police Department initially responded to reports of a domestic violence incident at the Circle K on E. Baker Highway. Musgrove allegedly held his girlfriend at knifepoint, but managed to quickly abscond before police could arrive to intervene. Officers from the Douglas Police Department, in conjunction with deputies from the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office, were to later locate Musgrove near his home, which was found ablaze.
Musgrove, who presented himself in the roadway armed with what looked to be a firearm, brought the weapon to his own head before making a run deeper into the neighborhood. His fleeing culminated in an attempt to force entry into another home. This situation escalated swiftly, leading officers and deputies to discharge their firearms, with Musgrove being struck multiple times. Subsequent to the gunfire, law enforcement jumped into action to provide medical care until EMS arrived. Musgrove survived, initially received treatment at Coffee Regional Medical Center, and then was transferred to another hospital in stable condition, as detailed the same press release.
It was during the investigation that officials determined the weapon Musgrove brandished was in fact a replica BB/airgun, not a real gun. The Georgia State Fire Marshall's Office is actively investigating the cause of the fire at Musgrove's home. As for the domestic violence incident at Circle K, the Douglas Police Department is in pursuit of the case and has secured an arrest warrant for Musgrove on an Aggravated Assault charge. The GBI has urged anyone with potentially valuable information to come forward, providing contact details for the relevant authorities and means to submit anonymous tips online or via a mobile app.
The GBI has confirmed that their investigation remains active and ongoing, with the expectation of more arrest warrants to be issued as the case progresses. The investigative files will, in due course, be handed to the Waycross Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office for a comprehensive review and potential prosecution.
