As the cost of higher education continues to create barriers for many, the Georgia Senate is focusing on solutions to make college more accessible for its residents. The Senate Study Committee on Higher Education Affordability is scheduled to hold its second meeting this Thursday, September 18, to directly address the issue. The committee, under the leadership of Sen. Nan Orrock (D–Atlanta), will deliberate from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and again from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Georgia State Capitol.
Established by SR 474, the study committee is tasked to thoroughly explore various strategies that could potentially to reduce the financial load carried by students and their families. According to the official Senate Press advisory, the meeting will delve into the possibility of crafting a means-tested scholarship program. The public is welcome to attend the discussions, and for those who can't make it, the proceedings will be live-streamed on the Georgia General Assembly's website, ensuring transparency and community engagement.
The committee's work complements ongoing national conversations about the rising costs of higher education and the burden of student debt. Acknowledging the critical need for reform, Sen. Orrock's committee embodies a proactive approach to possibly develop a more equitable system for educational funding. Members of the media are encouraged to confirm their attendance in advance by contacting Zach Pishock at [email protected], as indicated in the media advisory.
