Governor Greg Abbott has spearheaded a major investment in the welfare of Texas veterans by announcing over $7.7 million in grants to veteran service organizations throughout South-Central Texas and the San Antonio area, as detailed in an announcement from the Governor's office. The grants, sourced from the Funds for Veterans’ Assistance (FVA) program, aim to present accessible, crucial services to veterans, helping them to make the most of their civilian lives in their respective communities. Among the recipients of the grant is the Alamo Area Council of Governments, which will utilize their allocation for transportation and housing services, including $250,000 for rides and $350,000 for the Housing for Texas Heroes. Other notable awardees are the American GI Forum National Veterans Outreach Program, receiving $150,000 for homeless veteran support, and Family Endeavors, Inc., which will benefit from a $950,000 grant divided between financial assistance and clinical counseling services.
This financial backing joins the historically significant $46.3 million awarded earlier in May, which was distributed among 175 organizations, touching the lives of nearly 40,000 veterans and their dependents. Since the inception of the FVA grants in 2009, through the ongoing 2025-2026 cycle, Texas has directed over $359 million towards more than 1,600 grants. These contributions have facilitated a spectrum of services, from emergency financial support to mental health care,, and even legal representation.
The grants are sustained mainly through the Texas Lottery, where specific games are earmarked to support veterans' initiatives.
