A Gwinnett County police officer along with an off-duty nurse have been recognized for their lifesaving interventions after an 18-month-old child ceased breathing last week. Officer Mondesir, who was working on a report at the time, sprang into action as someone alerted him to the child's distress. As stated by FOX 5 Atlanta, Mondesir immediately began performing CPR on the toddler, an effort that was crucial in the pivotal moments before emergency services could take over.
The incident unfolded rapidly, with an off-duty nurse joining the fray to assist with the resuscitation. It is described in a video, released by the Gwinnett County police, that shows the intense and focused efforts to revive the young child. Body camera footage captures the officer and nurse administering CPR and desperately working to encourage the child to breathe. The partnership between the police officer and the nurse underscores a broader community of responders sharing a common purpose, despite the differences in their daily duties.
After approximately seven minutes of continuous effort, paramedics arrived on the scene and transported the child to a hospital. According to the toddler's parents, the child was suspected of having choked on an object prior to the terrifying incident. "The quick actions of the officer and nurse exemplify the essence of being a first responder," said the Gwinnett police in a statement cited by WSB Radio.
Officer Mondesir was recorded on body camera during the rescue, expressing his deep relief to a colleague after learning that the toddler would likely make a full recovery.
