In a precautionary response to potential health risks, Haifa Smoked Fish of Jamaica, Queens, has issued a recall for its smoked salmon and sea bass products due to Listeria contamination. The voluntary recall was announced following the discovery of the bacteria by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, as per PIX11.
The company was quick to promptly recall products that could pose a serious health concern, especially to individuals with weaker immune systems, who could suffer severe symptoms, including fever and headaches. Products with lot numbers 219 or 212 are the ones affected by this recall. To potentially save avoid a trip to the hospital, if you happen to have purchased these items, you are advised to not consume them and return them to the store where they were bought for a full refund. ABC7NY reported on the specifics of the recall, stressing the urgency of discarding the products in question.
While no illnesses have been linked to the recall so far, the concern is significant enough to have prompted a nationwide alert. The products in question were distributed to various retail stores across the United States. The Department of Agriculture's sampling results led to the identification of the bacteria that prompted the recall. The lot codes for the recalled Haifa smoked fish—specifically 8-ounce packages of Cold Smoked Salmon and Cold Smoked Seabass with lot #212—were listed clearly in an announcement shared by ABC7NY.
