Early Tuesday morning, Harris County deputies came under fire while responding to a call near Atascocita. Authorities said the man was armed with an automatic rifle and that the incident may have been connected to a swatting call, which is when false reports are made to draw law enforcement to a location. The deputies were not injured.
According to Click2Houston, 47-year-old Kenyon Levor Coleman was arrested in Humble after deputies said he was lying in wait in a wooded area on the 18600 block of Atlantic Drive. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez stated, "Coleman fired at deputies as they pulled up," but the rifle jammed. Coleman ran back into the woods before being taken into custody. He is charged with aggravated assault of a police officer. Authorities recovered the rifle, ammunition, and a chair at the scene.
KHOU reported that Sheriff Gonzalez said the suspect was armed with "numerous amounts of ammunition" and stated, "I thank God none of our deputies were hurt." Officials are investigating whether the incident was an attempt to lure officers as part of a swatting call. The suspect, Coleman, is being held at the Harris County Jail.
