In commemoration of the September 11 attacks, Governor Josh Green has directed that the U.S. flag and the state flag of Hawai‘i be flown at half-staff today from sunrise to sunset at the Hawai‘i State Capitol and all state offices and agencies. The observance honors the nearly 3,000 lives lost, including civilians and first responders. The event remains a significant moment in history, reflecting the actions of those who responded during the attacks. Governor Green emphasized the intention behind this act, saying in a statement obtained by the Official Office of the Governor, "May this day serve as a reminder of the courage and heroic strength of our first responders and countless other brave citizens."
Moreover, in response to a directive from the President of the United States, flags will also be lowered through sunset on September 14 in honor of Charlie Kirk. Having suffering from an act of political violence, the Governor’s orders reflect a stance against division escalating to harm. "There is no place in Hawaiʻi or in our country for political violence," Governor Green stated in a press release, condemning any action that might undermine democracy through hate or harm.
This dual observance, marking the anniversary of 9/11 and recognizing a recent loss. In line with Governor Green’s statement, the lowered flags symbolize both mourning and a call to action, "Democracy only survives when we resolve our differences through respect, dialogue and compassion," according to the Office of the Governor.
