Sergeant Amy Omaya has been named the HSLEOA Officer of the Year. The Hawai‘i Police Department reported that the award, one of the highest honors in state law enforcement, was presented during a ceremony on Oʻahu last Thursday. Omaya was recognized for her investigative work and service. Interim Police Chief Reed Mahuna stated that her work ethic, professionalism, and commitment to justice reflect the standards of the Hawai‘i Police Department.

An Area I Criminal Investigation Section detective since 2023, Sergeant Amy Omaya has served with the department for 14 years. During her tenure, she has played a key role in solving two major homicide cases on Hawai‘i Island, both of which have been referred to the Hawai‘i County Prosecutor’s Office. In one case, the June 2024 death of an elderly woman was determined to be a homicide following an investigation that included DNA analysis and the execution of multiple search warrants. The department’s announcement noted that her efforts led to the identification of a suspect.

In February, Sergeant Omaya faced the challenge of a fatal street shooting in Hilo. Despite an initial lack of witnesses and no clear motive, Omaya’s impressive organizational skills and interview techniques led to the recovery of vital evidence and led to another suspect being identified. Captain Rio Amon-Wilkins, Sergeant Omaya’s commander, praised her handling of the cases saying, “She did fantastic work on these cases,” according to the Hawai‘i Police Department.

Sergeant Omaya has been recognized for her detailed investigative work and consistent efforts in pursuing criminal cases. Her contributions have been acknowledged within the community. The Hawai‘i Police Department issued a statement congratulating her on receiving the award and thanked her for her continued service to the residents of Hawai‘i Island.
