Mark your calendars, Vancouver residents and I-5 travelers, because you'll need to plan around a major highway closure happening soon. In a bid to enhance the city's electrical infrastructure, both directions of Interstate 5 will be shut down overnight on September 13. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) will be working together to install overhead transformer lines, a move aimed at improving connectivity for all Clark County travelers. According to details gleaned from WSDOT, the northbound and southbound lanes between State Route 500 and I-205 will be closed from 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, until 6 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 14.

Safety is the main concern during this operation, with WSDOT officials acknowledging the inconvenience but stressing the necessity for caution. "Safety is our top priority for both travelers and road crews," WSDOT Highway Maintenance Supervisor Matt Calderone said, in a statement obtained by WSDOT. Planning the shutdown overnight helps minimize delays and risks associated with the installation. Detours will be clearly signed to aid drivers navigating around the closure area.

The specifics of the closure include the blocking of all lanes of southbound I-5 from the I-5/I-205 split at Exit 7 to SR 500, accompanied by the shutdown of several key on-ramps. Those traveling south can detour via southbound I-205, flowing onto westbound SR 500, and then rejoining southbound I-5. Conversely, the northbound I-5 closure will lock down the artery stretching from SR 500 at Exit 2 to the I-5/I-205 split. Travelers headed north will have to use SR 500 east and will then be directed to northbound I-205. It is hoped these detours will ensure minimal delays for the traveling public.
