Public safety in Hickory is at risk due to unauthorized use of water from fire hydrants. The City of Hickory has stated that this activity is illegal and poses risks to the community. Three individuals have been charged this month for tapping into hydrants without permission.
Unauthorized hydrant use can cause contamination of the water supply by creating backflow, which may pull harmful substances into the drinking water system. According to the City of Hickory, improper connections can also damage the city’s water infrastructure, which can result in increased costs for residents to cover repairs.
Compromised hydrants can fail during emergencies, affecting firefighters’ ability to access water quickly. The city reports that first-time offenses for unauthorized hydrant use are Class 1 misdemeanors, and repeat offenses are Class H felonies. Fines can reach up to $5,000.
Businesses that need bulk water can apply for permits through the City of Hickory’s Public Utilities Department to access hydrants legally. Anyone with information about unauthorized hydrant use is encouraged to contact the Hickory Police Department at 828-328-5551. The city recommends providing details such as time, date, hydrant location, vehicle descriptions, and other identifying information. More information on reporting illegal use and obtaining water permits is available on the City of Hickory’s website.
