Hillsborough County Aging Services is dialing up the festivities this September for National Senior Center Month, showcasing a plethora of activities to engage seniors, as reported by Hillsborough County's official website. A diverse range of tournaments and cultural celebrations are in the lineup, aiming to bring together older adults for both competition and cultural appreciation.
The month's activities will peak with tournaments in chess, billiards, and Rummikub, pulling finalists from nine senior centers to contend for the championship title. For instance, the Chess Championship Tournament is set for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 10, at the Lutz Senior Center. Not to be outdone, the Billiards Championship Tournament will cue up at the same times on Friday, Sept. 12, at the Town 'N Country Senior Center, and the tile-shifting action of the Rummikub Championship Tournament takes over from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at the Oaks Senior Center.
Beyond the competitive spirit, the month will also embrace cultural celebration with the Hispanic Heritage Celebration. Scheduled for 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 25 at The Regent. This event promises to feature an array of Latin music, dance, and art, all while serving up traditional Latin cuisine. Anticipation is high, with expectations that over 400 seniors will partake in the activities, which also fall under National Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.
Hillsborough County Aging Services doesn't just roll out the red carpet in September; their efforts to engage the senior community are year-round, according to their statement. With seven senior centers and 14 dining and activity centers, seniors have ample opportunities to forge friendships through diverse activities such as painting, fitness training, Tai Chi, sewing, gardening, and more. The overarching goal is to connect seniors and enhance their quality of life, as National Senior Center Month spotlights the valuable resources offered to the 50-plus demographic throughout Hillsborough County.
