Splish, splash, and dash your way to the first Kawamoto Classic Swimming Event, where the Hawai‘i Island youth can dive into aquatic sports. The Hawai‘i Island Police Activities League (HI-PAL) has teamed up with the County of Hawai‘i Parks and Recreation Aquatics Division and USA Swimming to make a splash with this free event slated for September 27, 2025, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Charles “Sparky” Kawamoto Swim Stadium in Hilo, as reported by the Hawai‘i Police Department.
At the heart of the event, geared towards ages 8 to 17, is promoting water safety and the swoon of aquatic sports. Featured will be water polo demos, diving lessons, and swimming techniques, all taught by a melting pot of student volunteers, coaches, and staff from Waiākea and Hilo schools, ready to turn little ones into the next water wunderkinds, according to the Hawai‘i Police Department announcement. If you're hoping to introduce your kids to the beauty of swimming, this come-one-come-all event is tailor-made factoring in your offspring's aquatic skills at zero cost.
With an eye on inclusivity, "This event provides a safe and fun opportunity for youth to gain valuable water skills while learning the importance of teamwork and healthy activities," Lieutenant William Derr of the Hilo Community Policing Section extolled the benefits of the event in a statement made by the Hawai‘i Police website. Registration kicks off at the crack of dawn on the event day, and parents need to note that a signed guardian permission slip is the ticket in. Tots under 12 will need an adult sidekick to attend, and a short swim test is the gateway check to tailor activities to their swimming credentials.
Participants should come in swim-approved attire and bring a light lunch or snack. All children are welcome, whether they are beginners or experienced swimmers. For more details or to register early, contact Lieutenant William Derr at [email protected].
