In a bid to counter the illicit spread of narcotics in Holyoke's green spaces, Holyoke Police Department's Parks Engagement Initiative scored another point this week. According to a social media post from the department, a suspect was caught in the act, leading to an arrest for dealing drugs in Gramps Park.
It's been a part of Chief Brian Keenan's strategy to enforce a "proactive police presence". On Tuesday, Officer Johnathan Ortiz, while executing the initiative, spotted suspicious activity. Help soon arrived in the form of Officers Justo Pagan, Xavier DeJesus, and Marian Rivera. Attempting to leave the scene, reaching into his pockets, the suspect Felix Vargas, 22, decided then to bolt — down an alley, and after a scuffle with the law enforcement, was detained.
The confrontation with Vargas yielded not only a brief struggle but a sizeable haul of illicit substances. Officers discovered around 50 bags of a substance believed to be heroin/fentanyl and an additional cache of cocaine. Alongside the drugs, Vargas was also found carrying two knives at the time of his apprehension.
Now facing multiple charges, Vargas, a Belchertown resident, is brought before the law to account for his alleged transgressions. His rap sheet, detailed by the police, includes assault and resisting alongside the intents to distribute Class A and B drugs, with an added layer, this being a subsequent offense for a Class B drug. The officers, after a pursuit down an alley, involved in the arrest enabled the swift enactment of justice.
