Last Sunday night, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) became saviors to three off-road motorcyclists lost near the Kipapa Ridge Trail in Waiawa. According to an official report released by the HFD, a 911 call initiated the rescue efforts at approximately 7:15 p.m.
Embarking on what they expected to be an adventurous journey, the trio began their trek between the iconic trail and the perimeters of Waiawa Prison. But as the sun bid its adieu, the riders found themselves enveloped in darkness, unable to trace back their path. With just over half their phone battery remaining, the beleaguered motorcyclists reached out for help, their one connection to safety. HFD dispatched five units, with a total of 13 personnel, arriving promptly at the scene by 7:27 p.m. to set the stage for an aerial retrieval.
The rescue, entailing night-time conditions and unfavorable terrain, proved a testament to the proficiency of the HFD. Air 1, equipped with night-vision technology, pierced the shroud of night, pinpointing the stranded riders through precise geolocation. A rescue specialist was lowered to the ground at 7:57 p.m.
The stranded individuals were found to be unharmed, a fortunate conclusion to what could have been, a perilous predicament. After evaluation, the party was airlifted to safety. By 8:47 p.m., all three were back on solid ground, declining any need for further medical attention. In the end, the night’s story was one of success, with every HFD member returning safely and no injuries reported.
