In an effort to alleviate the notorious gridlock familiar to Howard County commuters, the department announced the initiation of a construction project geared toward extending the eastbound I-70 exit lane heading onto southbound US 29, near Ellicott City. The additional 835 feet to the deceleration lane aims to forge a smoother transition off the interstate, detailed in an announcement posted on the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration's website.
This project, ringing in with a $4.1 million price tag, is expected to reach its completion in the bloom of spring 2026. SHA District Engineer Andrew Radcliffe Jr. underlined the need for this expansion, stating, “People familiar with the area know the congestion and the volume of vehicles using this exit, not just during the morning commute hours but throughout the day.” His comments reflect the daily hustle of traffic that tells the story of each commuter struggling against the current of vehicles on this stretch of road, as documented by the State Highway Administration.
To facilitate the construction, a work schedule arranging for daytime and overnight toil has been crafted. Conversely, the night will unfurl with right lane and shoulder closures, allowing crews to operate beneath the shroud of darkness - and lessened traffic.
In harmony with MDOT's Serious About Safety initiative, which champions the reduction of risks on the state's roads for all who travel them, this project is more than just laying asphalt; it's a venture in preserving lives. Pessoa Construction Company, a certified Maryland Minority Business Enterprise, has been tapped as the primary contractor, as the lanes will not only be widened, but the notion of safe passage in construction zones will be cemented. And with the extension, automated speed enforcement will keep a vigilant eye on eastbound I-70, ensuring that the rush to depart does not overstep the bounds of safety, as reported by the SHA's news release.
