The scammers often share a sob story or claim an urgent emergency, offering a generous "cash tip" as an incentive, according to the HPD.
In the scam's typical iteration, the scam artist offers a fictitious $500 check and requests the ATM patron to deposit it into their account. To then quickly provide the scammer with $500 in cash seems like a win-win as the ATM screen falsely assures that the funds have been credited. Victims are even offered a $100 reward for their help. Yet, the truth reveals itself often too bitterly, usually within a day, as the bank identifies the check as worthless, leaving the account holder to reckon with a $400 loss.
Banks are actively urging the public to take precautions when handling financial transactions. Among the guidelines shared, a crucial piece of advice stands out: "Never conduct financial transactions on behalf of strangers," as per the HPD. The department also warned against accepting or depositing checks from unacquainted individuals and to report any suspicious encounters to the proper financial institution.
The ruse has already tricked multiple victims into parting with hundreds of dollars.
