Border officers at the Laredo World Trade Bridge intercepted $16 million worth of methamphetamine hidden in a shipment of frozen mangos earlier this month. The shipment contained 733 packages totaling about 1,790 pounds, according to Fox San Antonio.
The Federal Newswire reported that the seizure resulted from a secondary inspection using a nonintrusive inspection system and a canine sweep. Alberto Flores, Port Director for the Laredo Port of Entry, said it is common to find narcotics mixed with food products, and officers used targeting and technology to seize the methamphetamine.
Homeland Security Investigations has opened a criminal investigation into the origin and intended distribution of the drugs.
