An in-custody death is currently under investigation at the San Diego Central Jail following the passing of a 35-year-old man identified as Steven Curren. Found in medical distress by fellow inmates last Saturday, deputies and emergency responders were unable to revive him.
Hoodline reports that the deceased had been held on charges related to vehicle theft and possession of stolen property since last Friday. Despite the quick action taken by deputies at approximately 3:08 p.m., when notified by other incarcerated individuals, his life saved turned out to be futile after being transported to the hospital.
The San Diego Sheriff's Office released a statement, saying, "Deputies discovered Mr. Curren unresponsive inside his cell." The San Diego Fire Department and paramedics also responded to the emergency call and continued with life-saving measures until Mr. Curren was pronounced deceased roughly an hour and a half later at about 4:31 p.m. The identity of the deceased was initially withheld pending family notification. In a statement obtained by the San Diego County Sheriff's Office, they expressed their sympathies to the Curren family and all those affected by the tragic occurrence and indicated that a Family Liaison Officer would provide ongoing support to the family.
The inquiry into the exact circumstances of Mr. Curren's death continues, as The Citizens' Law Enforcement Review Board (CLERB) was apprised regarding the incident, and the Sheriff's Homicide Unit is in charge of the investigation, as standard procedure following any in-custody death. As the community awaits answers, the autopsy by the Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to clarify the cause and manner of death, ensuring a transparent process for all involved, and continuing support to the man's family by the Sheriff's Family Liaison Officer.
