A 35-year-old man in custody at the San Diego Central Jail died after being found in medical distress, according to the San Diego Sheriff's Office. The incident occurred yesterday, when other inmates alerted deputies that the man was unresponsive. Deputies attempted life-saving measures before summoning paramedics and the San Diego Fire Department, who continued efforts to revive the individual.
The detainee had been held since last Friday on charges related to vehicle theft and possession of stolen property and was discovered by deputies at approximately 3:08 p.m. yesterday. "Deputies discovered the individual unresponsive inside his cell," the Sheriff's Office statement detailed. The man was pronounced dead at a local hospital roughly an hour and a half later, at about 4:31 p.m.
The Sheriff's Office is withholding the identity of the deceased pending notification of his family. In the meantime, they have extended "our sympathies to the decedent's family and all those affected by his passing." The case is under investigation by the Sheriff's Homicide Unit, as per standard protocol, and the Citizens' Law Enforcement Review Board (CLERB) has been informed of the death.
