An investigation is underway following an officer-involved shooting in the Mission Division of Los Angeles, as confirmed by the Los Angeles Police Department's Force Investigation Division and the California Department of Justice. The incident, which left a 50-year-old man dead, occurred on Wednesday just past the evening's early lull. According to the LAPD, officers responded to a distressing radio call of an Assault with a Deadly Weapon suspect situated at the 8700 block of Orion Avenue. Gustavo Ramirez, the man identified as the suspect, was reportedly armed with a glass bottle and what appeared to be a firearm.
When officers arrived at the scene, an airship provided aerial support, directing units on the ground. They encountered Ramirez near Orion Avenue and Parthenia Street, where they issued verbal commands in an effort to de-escalate. As reported by the LAPD, Ramirez ignored those orders and pointed a handgun at them, prompting officers to open fire.
The aftermath of the confrontation was swift. Paramedics transported Ramirez to a local hospital, but his injuries proved fatal. The object he wielded, initially believed to be a legitimate firearm, was later identified as a black plastic replica, as detailed by the LAPD. The replica handgun has been taken into evidence. It is important to note, no officers or bystanders were hurt during the incident.
The investigation is being led jointly by the Force Investigation Division (FID) and the Department of Justice, both of which assumed control of the scene.
