A fire broke out at a Phoenix church on Sunday evening, destroying a vacant classroom building. The Phoenix Fire Department said the fire started around 9 p.m. near 7th Street and Broadway Road. No injuries were reported, as per ABC15.
The church's senior leader, Dr. Earl Newton, said the fire destroyed two $12,000 mobile classrooms intended for a pre-school and a homeless outreach hub, though utilities had not yet been connected as approvals were pending. Nearby buildings were unharmed after firefighters contained the blaze, which responders described as involving "heavy smoke and fire," using high-water application from above to keep the fire to a single structure, according to KOLD.
The church is organizing a community clean-up and is requesting volunteers and supplies such as masks, goggles, gloves, shovels, rakes, a 14-yard dumpster, and a 14" chop saw with a demolition blade, as mentioned by ABC15. The cause of the fire is under investigation, and local authorities are reviewing the details. Community members are providing support and resources for the recovery.
