In a tragic incident early Monday morning, Joliet police found a man and his wife dead in what they believe to be a case of murder-suicide. According to CBS News Chicago, officers responded to reports of gunfire at the 1800 block of Burshire Court at approximately 5:49 a.m. and discovered the unresponsive 40-year-old male in the yard. Inside the home, the body of a 40-year-old woman was found, both deceased from gunshot wounds.
The couple's four children, ranging in age from 3 to 16, were found unharmed within the home and subsequently placed into protective custody. In a preliminary investigation, as WGN-TV reports, it is believed that after shooting his wife, the man exited the house before taking his own life with the same handgun. Being found in the yard, the gun was later recovered by the authorities.
Following their initial care by police, the children were released to the custody of a family member. As the Joliet Police Department continues its investigation into these events, it encourages anyone with information to contact the Joliet Police Department's Investigation Division at 815-724-3020.
