Los Angeles carwash owners are on high alert as the LAPD searches for additional victims following a spate of elaborate vandalism and theft incidents. The suspects, identified as Hulisses Ochoa and Joselyn Encalada, resorted to pry tools and makeshift devices to tamper with payment kiosks, leading to significant financial losses for a number of self-serve carwash businesses across multiple neighborhoods.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department's news release, the suspects honed a preferred method that involved forcing open the kiosk's faceplate to sabotage its vacuum system, replace locks, and later return to collect dollar coins unable to be sucked into the machines. An investigation led to the recovery of tools, coins, and locks from two impounded vehicles associated with suspects on September 12 and September 13. Both were booked on felony vandalism charges soon after.
Authorities are now urging others who may have experienced similar crimes to step forward. Rampart Burglary Theft Detectives are particularly interested in reports from any carwash operators within Los Angeles or its surrounding areas that could be connected to this operation. The crime spree, spanning several carwashes, resulted in thousands of dollars in damages, with the culprits making away with hundreds more in currency from each location.
The confiscated items from Ochoa's vehicle include U.S. currency, various tools with adhesive residue, and an assortment of broken and new locks. Ochoa, age 34, and Encalada, also 34, are awaiting further legal proceedings. Anyone with information linked to these incidents is encouraged to contact the LAPD or LA Regional Crime Stoppers, where anonymity is assured for those who prefer it.
