Las Cruces residents might be feeling a bit more wary of pushing the pedal to the metal near school zones after a string of recent traffic citations. The Las Cruces Police Department’s Traffic Unit cracked down on drivers Wednesday morning with a focused enforcement operation right outside Mayfield High School. During just one hour, officers were busy handing out a total of 46 traffic citations to drivers flouting the rules of the road, according to the City of Las Cruces.
Among the 46 traffic citations, a noticeable number were for those traveling above the speed limit, with 11 tickets dished out for this infraction alone. Not far behind were the 10 motorists cited for operating vehicles without proper registration, a clear reminder to keep vehicle paperwork up to date. This enforcement operation took place between 8 and 9 a.m. along North Valley Drive and Hoagland Road, situated near the center of adolescent education and activity, further emphasizing the necessity of cautious driving in potentially vulnerable zones.
The tally didn't stop just at speedsters and paperwork dodgers. Officers issued citations across a variety of offenses: seven for failure to provide proof of insurance, two for drivers without a valid license, and four for the increasingly common offense of using a cell phone while driving. Additionally, three citations were handed out for window obstruction, and nine covered miscellaneous traffic violations. This concerted law enforcement effort underscores a continued push to maintain safety in school vicinities, where young pedestrians are often present.
