The famed City of Las Vegas, often bustling with tourists and travelers, has seen a downturn in its airport foot traffic as summer concluded. Harry Reid International Airport reported approximately 4.57 million arriving and departing passengers for the month of August, a downward trend of 5.8% compared to the same period last year, News3LV relayed from the Clark County Department of Aviation data.
According to the airport figures, a steep 5.9% year-over-year drop was noted particularly in domestic travel, while international jaunts mildly tried to buck the trend, only to fall 3.7% compared to August 2024. Labor Day, a customary spike in travel, interestingly did not manage to significantly reverse the downturn. This year, three of the Labor Day weekend days occurred in August, potentially to effect little in counteracting the broader decline, while last year had only two of such days, as reported by 8NewsNow.
In more detailed numbers, year-to-date statistics show a cumulative 4.5% decrease in total flyers, translating to roughly 37 million people who have passed through the airport. Struggling budget air carrier Spirit Airlines perhaps epitomizes this downtrend the most evidently, with a notable 46% decline in passengers for the month. On the other hand, Southwest and United have shown resilience, with a passenger uptick of 4.2% and an impressive 11.2%, respectively, according to figures from the Clark County Department of Aviation.
However, not all carriers are experiencing incremental gains. Both Delta and American saw their numbers dwindle by 2% and 4.5%, respectively, in August. North of the border, Canadian traffic also contributed to the overall dip, as Air Canada saw a substantial 40% drop, and WestJet fell by 34% compared to the year-ago month—a significant portion of the international decline, as mentioned by News3LV.
