In April, a custody dispute in a Summerlin law office ended in a shooting. During a court-ordered deposition, attorney Joe Houston shot and killed his former daughter-in-law Ashley Prince and her husband Dennis Prince, then killed himself, according to News3lv.
The final Metro police report said Joe Houston shot someone shortly after a meeting where he questioned the Princes about his son Dylan’s children. An audio recording showed the meeting had just started when the shooting happened. Police found a handwritten note from Houston that said, "In this life there is good and EVIL — I don’t know if I’m good — But I know you’re evil — Dylan is a great dad — When are you going to stop trying to take (redacted) away from him? When are you going to stop HARASSING the Houston family?" The report stated that Houston acted alone, and no one else, including his son Dylan, knew about it, as reported by Las Vegas Review-Journal.
A family deposition was stopped when Joe Houston opened fire after just over a minute of questioning, shooting for less than two minutes before taking his own life within ten minutes of the start, with sirens audible, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Ashley Prince's parents later filed wrongful death lawsuits against Joe Houston’s estate and Katherine Houston, who they say knew about the planned shooting, a claim she denies. Attorney Lisa Rasmussen, representing Katherine Houston in the child custody case, said her attempts to reduce tensions with Dennis Prince were difficult, noting, "To me it seemed out of the ordinary and overboard," as mentioned by Las Vegas Review-Journal. The report includes medical records, police accounts, and family information about the incident.
