The City of Lawton will soon be bustling with energy as the Open Streets Committee gears up for its latest community initiative. In a move lauded at the recent City Council meeting, the committee will carve out a piece of downtown Lawton solely for pedestrian use, a nod to their ten-year commitment to fostering community health. The initiative has been a collaboration stitch of various organizations, including the Fit Kids Coalition of Southwest Oklahoma, Comanche County Memorial Hospital’s TSET Healthy Living Program, the Comanche County Health Department, and others, per a statement from the City of Lawton's official announcement.
With the upcoming "Bouncing into Fall" event slated for September 20, C Avenue from 2nd to 5th Streets will transform into an interactive space from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., offering an array of free activities, including a full block of inflatables for the youth and numerous opportunities to engage in fitness routines, health education, and the chance to savor the communal tapestry woven when streets echo with footsteps, not tire treads. The celebration is part of the City’s KidsFirst Initiative, a broader effort spotlighted in the proclamation to prioritize healthy, safe, and active lifestyles for the city’s youth.
