The City of Long Beach is buzzing with anticipation for the upcoming grand opening of the Silverado Park Signature Playground. On Friday, Sept. 12, at noon, residents are invited to witness the ribbon-cutting ceremony at 1545 W. 31st St., the latest effort by the city to bolster community engagement through upgraded recreational spaces. Mayor Rex Richardson, Vice Mayor and Seventh District Councilmember Roberto Uranga, along with other notable city leaders, are expected to deliver remarks on the transformative project before officially marking its completion, in a statement made by the City of Long Beach.
"With the Silverado Park Signature Playground, we’re celebrating a major transformation in the heart of West Long Beach and showing what’s possible when we work together and put our promises into action," Mayor Rex Richardson said, as stated by the City of Long Beach. The playground isn’t just a spot for kids to swing and slide—it’s part of the Westside Promise, the city’s broader effort to revitalize neighborhoods through targeted investments that give local families more opportunities to thrive. The Silverado Park project embodies that vision, featuring bright colors and designs built for inclusive fun.
Anchoring the park is a playground designed for both preschoolers and school-age children, with spaces that encourage sensory, physical, and imaginative play. Its design draws inspiration from the nearby We Are the Seeds mural by artist Mer Young, echoing the mural’s vibrant themes in its structures. According to the City of Long Beach, upgrades include new inclusive play equipment, level concrete at the gym entrance, an ADA-compliant pathway and ramp, accessible picnic tables, a rubberized safety surface, and additional seating—all of which create a more welcoming, inclusive environment..
As part of the Elevate ’28 initiative, Silverado Park’s playground was funded through a combination of federal, local, and city infrastructure investments totaling $2.45 million. That includes $1.5 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Community Development Fund, secured with the support of former Congressman Alan Lowenthal. Measure A funds added $200,000, while Elevate ’28 itself contributed $750,000. Construction began in March 2025 and was completed earlier this month, just in time for Friday’s scheduled festivities. Elevate ’28 is Long Beach’s five-year plan to reinvigorate parks while improving transportation and accessibility citywide.
