In a recent declaration of guilt, Los Angeles resident Justin Damonte Mitchell, 32, admitted to his role in a Kern Valley State Prison-based drug conspiracy, as per the U.S. Attorney's Office. Mitchell pleaded guilty to charges involving the distribution and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and fentanyl.
Enveloped in the criminal affairs that stretch beyond prison walls, Mitchell was persuaded by his incarcerated brother, Kristopher Thomas, to aid in the smuggling and distribution of illegal substances. Accused of delivering a significant amount of fentanyl – a half-pound – to fellow conspirator Natasha Michelle Bailey for prison smuggling, Mitchell played a hand in sustaining the vicious cycle of narcotics trafficking within the institution. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, wiretaps on Thomas's unauthorized cellphone unveiled this operation. Later, Mitchell managed the transport of approximately 48 pounds of methamphetamine destined for Oklahoma and Alabama.
Multiple agencies, including the Drug Enforcement Administration, contributed to the investigation under the umbrella of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF). This prosecutor-led, intelligence-driven initiative targets the infrastructures of high-level criminal enterprises threatening the United States. Scheduled to face sentencing on December 1, 2025, by U.S. District Judge Jennifer L. Thurston, Mitchell confronts the prospect of a life sentence and a $10 million fine, as his future hangs in the balance based on the court's discretion after considering all statutory factors and federal Sentencing Guidelines, tipping the scales in ways yet unknown.
