Seattle's Yesler Terrace was the backdrop of a violent confrontation that escalated to a shooting last night, leaving a 28-year-old man in critical condition and a community shaken. According to SPD Blotter, at approximately 11:21 p.m. on September 1, local authorities responded to reports of gunshots at the intersection of Broadway and East Jefferson Street. On site, police discovered a man with multiple gunshot wounds and promptly administered medical assistance until he could be handed off to the Seattle Fire Department for further treatment.
During their investigation, officers learned that prior to the shooting, there had been a domestic violence (DV) assault involving the gunshot victim and his 25-year-old girlfriend. The woman had been attempting to leave the relationship when the assault occurred. The SPD Blotter reports that she reached out to her ex-partner, who is also the father of her child, for assistance in moving out. As the ex-partner arrived to help, the situation rapidly deteriorated into violence. Her current boyfriend allegedly began to chase and attack her ex-partner, threatening his life.
The confrontation turned potentially deadly as the boyfriend purportedly threatened to take the ex-partner's gun and use it against him. Fearing for his safety, the 25-year-old man shot his assailant multiple times. Police on the scene secured and processed the firearm involved, and the shooter was detained and subsequently released following his interview with the Gun Violence Reduction Unit (GVRU) detectives. The DV victim was also treated and later questioned by police.
With the investigation underway, authorities have to yet to fully uncover all the circumstances surrounding the shooting. However, what is clear, is that the gunshot victim faces allegations of strangulation and unlawful imprisonment connected to the earlier DV incident, as detailed by SPD Blotter. He currently remains in intensive care at Harborview Medical Center, and police plan to book him into King County Jail upon his release from the hospital.
