A man was killed and a woman was wounded in a shooting incident last night at a public housing complex in Bedford-Stuyvesant, according to officials. The shooting occurred just before midnight outside an apartment building at NYCHA’s Armstrong II development on Lexington Avenue. Gothamist reported that a 28-year-old man, identified as Shyhemm Lee, suffered a fatal shot to the head while a 23-year-old woman sustained a grazed wound to her neck.
Both victims were transported to Kings County Hospital, where Lee was pronounced dead. Left behind at the scene, detectives found a scooter and shell casings scattered across the street, which a News 12 reporter counted as having at least 21 evidence markers lined up on the ground. As reported by News 12, witnesses described seeing two men fleeing the crime scene, one dressed in all blue and the other wearing a gray shirt, light pants, and dark sneakers, running north on Marcy Avenue.
The woman, whose name has not been released, is listed in stable condition, police said. The investigation is ongoing and law enforcement officials have yet to make any arrests in connection with the deadly shooting. NYPD data shows that there has been a slight increase in homicides in the 79th Precinct, which includes Bed-Stuy, while incidents of shootings have remained unchanged compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, citywide statistics indicate a decrease of about 17% in both homicides and shootings.
Details about the relationship between the victims, or the circumstances leading to the assault, haven't been clearly established, with the police not stating if Lee and the injured woman were known to each other. Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact the NYPD with tips that may assist in the ongoing investigation.
