
After a tense standoff situation in Franklin County near Bunn, a man who barricaded himself inside his home and fired shots at law enforcement officers is now in custody. The incident, which went down on Twin Creek Drive on Monday evening, began after deputies responded to a call around 5:30 p.m. of gunfire heard from within a residence, according to officials from the Franklin County Sheriff's Office, CBS17 reported.
The situation escalated when, as Sheriff Kevin White articulated in a statement obtained by ABC11, the man inside the house fired shots at deputies, this development prompted an increase in law enforcement presence including the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation Bomb Squad and a heavily armored truck. Meanwhile, the suspect's family was at the scene during the standoff with his daughter-in-law revealing that she had to flee the house after hearing the gunshots, calling 911 in an attempt to get help for him.
Adding to the complexity of the case, the son of the barricaded man informed ABC11 that his father, said to be in his 70s and dealing with failing health including potential dementia and COPD, may have been heavily intoxicated at the time of the incident. This description painted a portrait not just of a criminal scenario, but also one marked by personal and health crises.
The standoff drew to a close after over seven hours of tension, with Sheriff White affirming that "The subject has been captured and taken into custody without further incident" he was gracious in a statement posted online, thanking the community for their prayers and expressing relief that the deputies were unscathed and had returned home to their families, as stated in WRAL News. During the operation, deputies had restricted movement into and out of the area as they worked to resolve the situation and no injuries were reported, the investigation into the circumstances of the event continues.
