
In a late-night confrontation in McDonald Borough, a man is now in custody after discharging a firearm at police officers. As per reports by WPXI, the incident unfolded when officers responded to a welfare check around 9:36 p.m. on a reportedly intoxicated and distressed individual located at a residence on the 300 block of Fairmont Street. The suspect, Stephen Joseph Budai, is said to have provoked the officers before barricading himself in the house and firing shots.
Allegheny County Police provided support following the gunfire, with SWAT units arriving at the scene to assist. Officers from neighboring police departments were also present, facing bullets that hit multiple vehicles, though, fortunately, no injuries have been reported. According to WPXI, Budai eventually surrendered to authorities at 11:10 p.m. after having retreated into a home that he emerged from and continued to engage in gunfire throughout the incident.
The standoff prompted a significant law enforcement response, with a collective effort bringing the tense situation to a close. In details shared by CBS News Pittsburgh, the Allegheny County Police confirmed the suspect's custody and the security of the scene by 11:26 p.m. last night.
Following his surrender, Budai was taken to a nearby hospital for an evaluation and is expected to face charges, the McDonald Police Department conveyed.
