Tensions are simmering in the food cart scene of Maricopa County, where health officials have been forced to turn up the heat on unpermitted mobile food vendors. The county's Environmental Services Department has been actively responding to a surge in foodborne illness reports, particularly those associated with the popular "tacos al pastor" sold by certain street vendors, as reported by Maricopa County. In a recent crackdown, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors has directed measures to be taken, including food seizures, citing the business owners, and outright shutting down some of the unlicensed operators.

Over the past three months, the Maricopa County Environmental Services Department (MCESD) has investigated 111 complaints, resulting in the seizure of more than 7,000 pounds of unsafe meat, as per Maricopa County. This enforcement comes after prior efforts to educate and collaborate with vendors. While the crackdown underscores serious public health concerns, it’s important not to paint all street vendors with the same brush. The majority—taco stands included—follow proper food safety practices and operate responsibly.

According to a recent Maricopa County statement, "unpermitted mobile street food vendors" have been the focus of the recent health drive. It's particularly those temporary setups—think pop-up tents and folding tables—that consumers should be wary of. Without a county-issued permit, these vendors are not required to stay in line with established food safety practices, such as maintaining proper food temperatures or handwashing.

Those who suspect they've dined at a dubious stand, or worse, fallen ill after such an experience, should swiftly get in touch with MCESD at (602) 506-6616 or to visit Maricopa.gov/Enviro to submit a complaint electronically, Maricopa County noted.
