The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) is ensuring that state parks are a place for everyone, rolling out a slate of accessible fall recreation opportunities designed for visitors of all abilities. According to an announcement on the department's website, the DCR's Universal Access Program (UAP) has scheduled a variety of adaptive activities, including hiking, paddling, golfing, and cycling.
In partnership with several non-profit organizations, the UAP is offering not just a series of programs but also specialized adaptive equipment meant to assist individuals with different levels of ability. "DCR's Universal Access Program is committed to ensuring that our state park system is inclusive, accessible, and welcoming to people of all abilities," said Commissioner Nicole LaChapelle, in a statement echoed by the DCR website. With the autumn colors on the horizon, nature lovers of all abilities can look forward to enjoying the outdoors.
Visitors can engage in adaptive paddling with kayaking, canoeing, and accessible rowing programs facilitated through partnerships with organizations such as Holyoke Rows. Additionally, DCR provides accessible golfer carts at their golf courses, and participants in need of mobility devices can avail of them free of charge, like the mobility scooter and the trackchair at Maudslay State Park, until October 31st, after making reservations online, details of which can be found on the DCR website.
UAP's programs are seasonal, running through fall at various parks, pools, beaches, and trails. The fall schedule will consist of 18 programs as stated on the official announcement. "This fall’s schedule marks the return of many beloved opportunities to explore our state through outdoor recreation," UAP Program Director Tom McCarthy told the DCR in an interview. Friends and family are invited to join the programs, creating shared experiences for all.
Last year's fall programming had nearly 470 participants, while the summer roster saw over 1,074 individuals join more than 55 programs, as reported by the DCR. People interested in these accessible recreation programs should register in advance to ensure a spot. More information on upcoming events and activities is available for those who join the UAP mailing list, which can be accessed by calling (413) 461-7126 or emailing [email protected].
