A Massachusetts man is facing charges following the alleged murder of his sister in their North Shore apartment, with both Boston 25 and NBC10 Boston reporting on the somber court proceedings that took place today. Joshua Smith, age 30, faced a judge in Lynn District Court on charges including murder and kidnapping in relation to the death of 38-year-old Michelle Knox, his sister, entering a plea of not guilty.
According to authorities, the incident unfolded shortly after 1 a.m. yesterday when Lynn police arrived at the Newhall Street address and found Smith outside where, he was reportedly making incriminating statements regarding the fatal incident before they discovered Knox's body inside the same apartment he had been sharing with his father, and not only did Smith confront law enforcement with a reportedly self-incriminating narrative but he did so while on probation, compounding legal complications he faces. Assistant Essex District Attorney Stefanie Stanbro shared details of the case with the court, though many specifics are sealed due to the early stage of the investigation and a judge's approval of the motion to impound the police report and criminal complaint.
Local resident Emilio Gonzales recounted the grisly scene to Boston 25, saying, "It was like horrific screams," Gonzales noted the neighborhood was shaken, with community members still processing the violent act, he indicated how unexpected such a tragedy was in an area not braced for such harsh realities. While neighbors weren't privy to the events leading to the police response, friends of Knox expressed their sadness to NBC10 Boston, with one, Tia Pittman, remembering Knox fondly and emphasizing her joyous and hardworking character and Pittman said, "She was actually like a cousin to me growing up," elaborating on the personal loss felt by those who knew Knox.
Smith is set to return to court for a probable cause hearing on Oct. 14, currently held without bail, and while the community and family cope with the aftermath of this domestic tragedy, investigators from the state and local police departments, along with the Massachusetts Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Knox's death. Smith's legal representation has not provided a statement on the case as of the latest updates.
