In a tense standoff that unfolded in Matthews, North Carolina, police were able to peacefully resolve a domestic incident that could have easily escalated. According to a social media post from the Matthews Police Department, officers responded to a domestic disturbance call on Thursday, finding a female victim who reported that her husband had assaulted her and held her against her will.

The suspect, identified as Mr. Tyrone Derrick Jenkins, was inside the residence with the couple's four children at the time the police arrived. Officers discovered Jenkins had two outstanding felony arrest warrants, escalating the urgency of the situation. Jenkins initially appeared outside the house before retreating and locking the doors, trapping the children inside. The Matthews Police Department negotiated for the safe release of the children, who were then reunited with their mother.

Negotiations persisted as the police aimed to coax Jenkins to surrender without further incident. A specialized Police Department Special Response Team (SRT) was even assembled at the scene, prepared for potential action. Eventually, Jenkins emerged from the residence but continued to resist police commands, prompting the officers to deploy a "Flashbang" or a non-lethal disorientation device, to secure his surrender, "in which Mr. Jenkins immediately surrendered and was safely taken into custody," per the Matthews PD’s account.

Following the incident, Jenkins faced multiple charges: four counts of false imprisonment, misdemeanor child abuse, misdemeanor domestic violence, and resisting a public officer. The department’s statement highlighted the effort of the responding officers and teams involved in the resolution of the crisis, acknowledging their commitment to safety, "We want to thank all of the responding officers, members of the MPD Negotiation Team, and the SRT for their quick action and commitment to maintaining the safety of all parties involved." No injuries were reported during the arrest of Mr. Jenkins, who was later transported to the Mecklenburg County Jail.
