Following a controversial Supreme Court decision that allows federal agents to engage in what many are calling "racial profiling" of Los Angeles residents, Mayor Karen Bass is taking a definitive stand. In a statement, she characterized the ruling as a broad-spectrum attack not only on Angelenos but on the personal freedoms foundational to the United States. "This isn’t just an attack on the people of Los Angeles, this is an attack on every person in every city in this country," Bass asserted, according to the Mayor's office.
The court's decision lifts a Temporary Restraining Order that had previously protected residents from discrimination based on skin color, accent, language, or place of work. Mayor Bass emphasized her opposition: "Today, the highest court in the country ruled that the White House and masked federal agents can racially profile Angelenos with no due process, snatch them off the street with no evidence or warrant, and take them away with no explanation," as per the Mayor's office.
In her official statement, Bass pledged not to yield to the pressures from both the White House and the nation's highest judicial body. "We will stand united," she claimed, calling out the perceived intent to divide the city. Among the steps she outlined, Mayor Bass mentioned an executive directive that supports Los Angeles' immigrant communities, complete with enhanced departmental protocols and a working group collaboration with the LAPD, the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs, and community leaders.
Furthermore, the mayor has acted to soften the operational and economic impacts of immigration raids and the federal response on Los Angeles communities. Her initiatives include meeting with affected families and businesses, launching citywide cleanups through Shine LA, and rallying support from more than a hundred labor leaders, business leaders, and immigrant rights groups to demand an end to the raids. She has also organized financial aid for impacted families, underscoring her commitment to supporting those most affected by these federal actions.
