Brittney Jackson, a Memphis mother facing multiple charges in connection with the death of her 4-year-old daughter, Sequoia Samuels, is anticipated to appear in court today, although her jury trial has been postponed. As per Local Memphis, Jackson was charged with first-degree murder, aggravated child neglect, abuse of a corpse, and filing a false report after the child's body was discovered in a trash can in June 2023 following a report of her missing.
The accusation reaching public awareness after Jackson and her boyfriend, Jaylon Hobson, initiated a search that included both local authorities and community members, according to details shared by Action News 5.
The trial's reset comes after an attorney intervened, shifting today's proceedings to a "report date" instead, though specifics on a new trial date remain undetermined. This change is in sync with Hobson's upcoming court appearance, who faces the same charges and is also scheduled for a "report date," Local Memphis reports. Despite initial charges including false reporting, both Jackson and Hobson were later indicted for more serious offenses, to include first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse, tampering with evidence, and, like before, false reporting, in October 2023, following significant developments in the investigation.
Police were told by Jackson that the front door of their home on Caldwell Avenue was found open on the morning of June 15, and little Sequoia was gone, resulting in a large-scale search; however, it was revealed that the girl had been deceased for weeks before being found in a nearby trash can as court documents obtained by WREG detailed how Jackson admitted to keeping the body stored in garbage bags within the house. Jackson also made allegations to the Memphis Police that Hobson attacked Sequoia multiple times, with the last attack leaving her unresponsive, and she "maintained" Sequoia's body without providing aid for several weeks.
While the full details of today’s proceedings have yet to be disclosed. Court records indicate that no bond has been set for Hobson, and Jackson’s bond has been revoked. Both Jackson and Hobson are scheduled to make separate court appearances on this date, where further updates may be released.
