Mesquite is set to honor its first responders with a citywide "Salute to Safety" campaign starting September 26, running through October 7. The initiative kicks off with a First Responder's Game at Mesquite Memorial Stadium, pitching Mesquite High School against Horn High School at 7 pm.
A different kind of story time is coming to local libraries as part of the festivities. Dubbed "Books and Badges," the series features firefighters and police officers reading to children, starting September 29th at the North Branch Library. Reading sessions are planned for various times throughout the week, offering multiple opportunities for kids to engage with Mesquite's heroes in uniform. Kicking off at 10:30 am, the first of these events will see the city's bravest and finest partner up with the power of storytelling to delight the young ones.
But it's not all about books; the city has brewed up "Ladders and Lattes," a chance to mingle with firefighters over a cup of coffee at Bear Cave Coffee on Davis Street. According to the City of Mesquite, this casual meet-up is scheduled for October 3 from 8-10 am.
Continuing the campaign, "Burgers with a Badge" welcomes residents to dine with their protectors at Braum's on North Galloway Avenue on October 6th. The lunchtime event promises to flip the usual order of service: it's the officers who will be serving the public. Representatives from the dispatch, police, and fire departments will lead the Pledge of Allegiance at the City Council meeting in the evening, elevating the day's salute to service and community commitment.
