Metra riders can look forward to a fresh experience on their commutes this fall as Metra rolls out its prototype Café Car on several lines for a test run. Starting on Sept. 30, the revamped railcar, featuring café-style seating and tables, is set to appear on the Rock Island Line, offering passengers an opportunity to relax in a more social ambiance compared to traditional train cars. According to NBC Chicago, passengers will be able to give their initial reactions through a survey provided during their journey.
The Café Car, created by Metra by removing the second level of one half of a car and installing various seating options like counters, stools, and booths, is designed to enhance the riding experience. Metra is striving not only to possibly attract new riders but also to gauge current riders' interest in such a car. In a statement obtained by Metra, CEO/Executive Director Jim Derwinski said, "This is your chance to check it out and tell us what you think. Would you use it? What amenities would you like to see? What other thoughts do you have?"
Following its debut at the end of September on the Rock Island Line, the Café Car is scheduled to migrate to various other lines throughout October and November. It will commence with a showcase on the LaSalle Street station on Oct. 6, inviting riders to view the car and share their thoughts. Participants in the survey during designated times can even expect some incentive, as Metra promises free snacks and beverages for their time and feedback.
Beyond providing a more engaging space for travelers, the Café Car represents Metra's responsiveness in seeking to regularly improve commuters' experience. The prototype will sequentially make its way to other lines such as the BNSF, Milwaukee District North Line, and various Union Pacific lines, among others. To not miss the chance to experience the Café Car and have your say, riders are encouraged to stay updated by visiting the Metra website for the detailed schedule, as times and locations are subject to change, as noted by NBC Chicago.
While this fall's introduction is temporary, it is a critical step for Metra in determining the future of the Café Car concept. Rider satisfaction and preferences gathered from this real-world trial will be key in deciding whether these cars become a regular facet of public transit in Chicago. So, if you're riding Metra, make sure to look out for the new car, complete the survey, and help shape the commuter rail service of tomorrow.
