Michigan residents recently faced a peak in gas prices, with the average cost for a gallon of regular unleaded reaching $3.39 last Wednesday. According to CBS News Detroit, as Labor Day weekend approaches, prices have slightly declined, with current averages around $3.30 per gallon. This represents a 15-cent increase from last month but is still 7 cents lower than the prices recorded at the same time last year.
These numbers translate to nearly $49 for a full 15-gallon tank of gas. AAA spokesperson Adrienne Woodland attributed the price increase to refinery issues in Whiting, Indiana, which contributed to the highest gas prices seen in 2025. Woodland told WNEM, "As the refinery gets back online, Michigan motorists may see some relief at the pump." Driven by these refinery issues, the price increase also reflects wider market trends, including higher demand and a decrease in domestic gasoline supply.
Price differences across Michigan highlight the varied economic landscape of gas costs in the state. According to the Auto Club Group, some of the highest prices were recorded in Ann Arbor at $3.37, Benton Harbor at $3.34, and Lansing at $3.32. Conversely, Marquette, Traverse City, and Flint reported some of the lowest prices, at $3.13, $3.16, and $3.22 respectively.
However, as motorists navigate the upward trend in gas prices, AAA offers practical tips to manage fuel expenditures. Among these suggestions, shared by WNEM, are consolidating errands, comparing local gas prices, and considering cash payments over credit to avoid extra fees. Additionally, reducing vehicle load and adopting conservative driving habits can contribute to better fuel economy. As a final tip running out of gas driving conservatively, AAA suggests enrollment in savings programs such as Shell's Fuel Rewards, which offers a discount of 5 cents per gallon to members.
Additionally, for those seeking to reduce fuel expenses, apps like AAA's offer useful information on the cheapest gas prices in the state, helping drivers identify potential savings over time.
