In the wake of the devastating August storms and subsequent flooding, Milwaukee County is taking steps to aid residents in their recovery efforts. According to a recent announcement by the Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) will open their doors starting Wednesday, September 24, 2025. These centers are designed to assist individuals facing uninsured losses or require emergency support due to the natural disasters.

The initiative, detailed in a report by the Milwaukee County's official website, outlines that DRCs aim to facilitate the aid process, offering face-to-face assistance with FEMA and other relief services. "Applying for federal assistance can feel overwhelming, but no one has to navigate the process alone," Crowley stated. Providing information on FEMA aid, application updates, and guidance through the appeals process, these centers are crucial for residents grappling with post-storm bureaucracy. While online applications through DisasterAssistance.gov or via phone at 800-621-3362 are recommended, the DRCs cater to those requiring personalized help.

Two locations have been established for the Milwaukee County DRCs: McNair Elementary School in the City of Milwaukee, and the Wauwatosa City Hall in Wauwatosa. It's important to note that on Friday, October 10, the Wauwatosa DRC will relocate, with details on the new site forthcoming. FEMA financial assistance may cover a wide range of needs, from basic home repairs to medical expenses, with a deadline for individual assistance applications set for November 12.

Additionally, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is contributing to recovery efforts by opening a Business Recovery Center (BRC). It began operating on September 17, as reported by the Milwaukee County's news update. Offering specialized guidance for the SBA's disaster loan program, the BRC staff assist with inquiries and application procedures, which, can also be processed online at sba.gov/disaster. The deadline for these disaster loan applications is November 10.
