A suspect is now in custody following a shooting incident in the parking lot of Fairfield High School, which occurred as students were being dismissed Tuesday afternoon. Citing the Fairfield Police Department, ABC10 reports that at least one gunshot was fired towards an occupied vehicle, but thankfully, there were no injuries.
The suspect, identified as a minor, turned themselves in to the authorities yesterday morning with the help of family members. This development came after an altercation in the high school's student parking lot near the football stadium. In a fast response, police officials claimed to have arrived on the scene within 60 seconds of the initial report, as reported by CBS Sacramento.
While Fairfield Police have reiterated that there is no ongoing threat, this incident has understandably shaken the local community. "Concern, scary with all that's happening anyway at schools," Tracy Watson, a parent of a student at Fairfield High, told ABC10. Another concerned individual, a former student with a sibling currently attending the school, expressed fears for her sister's safety at the institution.
In efforts to restore a sense of safety and order, the principals of Fairfield High and Sem Yeto consoled their community with a message outlining the measures taken following the incident. "Our team took a number of steps to ensure our campus was a safe and supportive place for everyone," the schools' administrators remarked, as noted by ABC10. No clear information was provided by Fairfield police about whether the suspect was a student at the high school, as of their last statement.
